Defect Management

Glossary Hero Shape

Defect Management is the process of identifying, documenting, prioritizing, and resolving defects or bugs found in software during the development or testing phases. It helps ensure that issues are systematically tracked and addressed to improve software quality and stability.

Key components of defect management include:

  • Defect Identification: Detecting defects through testing or user feedback. A defect can be anything that causes the software to behave incorrectly or fail to meet requirements.
  • Defect Logging: Documenting defects with detailed information, such as steps to reproduce, severity, impact, and screenshots or logs to help developers diagnose the issue.
  • Prioritization: Categorizing defects based on their severity (e.g., critical, major, minor) and impact on the system to determine which defects should be fixed first.
  • Defect Resolution: Assigning defects to the appropriate team members for investigation and resolution. This includes fixing the bug, verifying the fix, and retesting.
  • Tracking and Reporting: Using tools to track the status of defects (e.g., open, in progress, closed) and generate reports on defect trends, resolution rates, and testing progress.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Analyzing the underlying causes of defects to prevent them from recurring in future releases.

Effective defect management ensures that issues are handled promptly and efficiently, leading to higher software quality, smoother releases, and improved user satisfaction.
